When to call an ambulance rather than come to us
Call 1669 for a Thai ambulance, or get straight into a car to a hospital, for chest pain, severe breathlessness, stroke symptoms, a serious head injury, uncontrolled bleeding, a seizure that will not stop, or anyone who cannot be woken.
The number is free and operators generally speak some English, though it helps enormously to have the address and a nearby landmark ready before you dial. If you are unsure whether something qualifies, call us and describe it. You will get an honest answer, including “put the phone down and call 1669 now” when that is the right answer.
The injuries this town actually produces
Scooter injuries are the most common serious problem we treat, and they cluster in two windows: late at night, and in the first rain after a dry spell, when a road surface that has been collecting dust and oil for weeks turns genuinely treacherous in the first ten minutes of a downpour.
In the water it is jellyfish stings and coral cuts, both of which are routinely made worse by well-meaning first aid on the beach. What happens when you arrive

The first aid that genuinely changes the outcome
Most first aid makes very little difference. A handful of things make a great deal:
- Burns — hold under cool running water for a full twenty minutes. Never ice, never toothpaste, never oil.
- Bleeding — press hard on the exact spot with a clean cloth and keep pressing. Do not lift it every thirty seconds to check.
- Animal bites — wash under running water with soap for fifteen minutes. This lowers rabies risk more than anything we do afterwards.
- Suspected fracture — do not straighten the limb. Support it in the position it is lying in.
- High fever — paracetamol only until dengue has been excluded. No ibuprofen, no aspirin.
- Jellyfish sting — vinegar or sea water, never fresh water, which fires the remaining stinging cells.
Coming in with a child at three in the morning
Parents apologise for this constantly and there is nothing to apologise for. Children get sicker faster than adults and recover faster too, and the sensible threshold for having a child looked at is much lower than for yourself.
Come in without hesitating for any fever in a baby under three months, a child who is difficult to rouse, laboured breathing, a rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass, repeated vomiting with no wet nappies, or a child who simply is not behaving like themselves. Bring the child rather than the paperwork, and tell us their age and rough weight so medication can be dosed correctly on arrival. If a clinic waiting room would distress them, a doctor hotel visit is often calmer for everyone.
