Heat exhaustion treatment in Bang Tao

You have been walking since morning, you have gone quiet, you feel sick, and your skin is clammy despite the heat. Phuket combines high temperatures with humidity that stops sweat evaporating, and that combination is what makes the heat here genuinely dangerous rather than merely uncomfortable. Heat exhaustion treatment in Bang Tao is straightforward and works well — but the line between heat exhaustion and heat stroke is worth knowing before you need it.

Recognising heat exhaustion

It builds over hours rather than striking suddenly:

  • Heavy sweating with cool, clammy, pale skin
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Nausea, sometimes vomiting
  • Muscle cramps, usually in the legs
  • Weakness and heavy tiredness
  • A fast, weak pulse
  • Dark urine, or passing very little

The person is unwell and uncomfortable but still themselves — able to answer questions, follow what is going on, and tell you how they feel. That last point is the one that matters most.

Confusion is the line to heat stroke

Heat stroke is a medical emergency with a genuine death rate, and the changes that mark it are behavioural rather than physical.

Confusion, agitation, slurred speech, seizures or loss of consciousness, a body temperature above 40C, and skin that may be hot and dry because sweating has failed altogether.

Someone who is hot and miserable can be cooled and rehydrated where they are. Someone who is hot and does not know where they are needs an ambulance now. Call 1669, move them into shade, remove excess clothing and cool them aggressively with water and fanning while you wait. Do not wait to see whether they improve — the delay is what causes the harm.

What to do straight away

Get out of the sun and into air conditioning or deep shade. Lie down with the legs raised. Loosen clothing.

Cool the skin with cool water, wet cloths and a fan, concentrating on the neck, armpits and groin where large blood vessels run close to the surface and heat is carried away fastest.

Sip oral rehydration solution rather than plain water, because you have lost salt as well as fluid, and large volumes of plain water alone can dilute your sodium and make things worse. Most people improve substantially within about thirty minutes.

How we treat it at the clinic

We check core temperature, blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation, and look for the complications that actually matter — kidney strain from dehydration and disturbed salts in the blood.

An IV drip with the correct electrolytes corrects things far faster than drinking, particularly for anyone who is vomiting. We frequently run blood tests to check kidney function and sodium levels, because a normal-looking person can have significantly deranged bloods after a day in this heat.

Most people leave feeling considerably better within an hour or two.

Who is most at risk here

Older travellers, young children, anyone who arrived from a cold country within the last few days, people on blood pressure or diuretic medication, anyone who drank heavily the night before, and anyone exercising in the middle of the day.

Alcohol is a common factor because it dehydrates and blunts the early warning signs at the same time. Give yourself several days to acclimatise, keep hard exercise to early morning or evening, drink steadily through the day rather than in bursts, and take genuine breaks in shade. Sunburn also makes heat illness more likely, since damaged skin cannot regulate temperature properly — see sunburn treatment.

Children, and the day after

Children overheat faster than adults. They have a larger surface area relative to their size, they sweat less efficiently, and they will not reliably stop and say they feel unwell — they simply go quiet or become unusually irritable, which is easy to attribute to tiredness.

Make them drink on a schedule rather than on request, keep them in shade between 10 and 4, use a hat and a rash vest, and treat any child who is floppy, refusing fluids, or not producing wet nappies as needing to be seen the same day.

For everyone, the day after matters more than people expect. Heat illness leaves you more susceptible for several days rather than hours, so a full beach day immediately afterwards is how people end up back a second time. Take it gently, stay out of the midday sun, keep drinking, and if you feel unusually tired or headachy the next morning that is the aftermath rather than a new problem — though if it comes with fever, get it checked, because dengue can look similar at the start.

Frequently asked questions

How much does treatment cost?

A consultation with observation is inexpensive. An IV drip with electrolytes and blood tests costs more, and is quoted before it is started.

Can a doctor come to my hotel?

Yes, and a doctor hotel visit works well for heat exhaustion. If there is any confusion or loss of consciousness, call 1669 instead — that is heat stroke and it cannot wait for travel.

How long does recovery take?

Most people feel much better within a few hours of cooling and fluids, though tiredness often lasts a day or two. Take the following day gently and stay out of the midday sun.

Is it enough to drink water?

Not on its own if you have been sweating for hours. You need salt as well, so oral rehydration sachets or salty food alongside the water.

Can I go back in the sun tomorrow?

Briefly and carefully, early morning or late afternoon. Having had heat exhaustion once makes you more susceptible for several days.

How long does it take to acclimatise?

Most of the adaptation happens over about seven to fourteen days. The first three days are when people are most at risk, which is exactly when most holidays are busiest.
