Animal bite treatment in Bang Tao
A street dog near the market, a cat at a restaurant, a monkey that grabbed for a bag and caught a hand. It happened fast, the skin is broken, and the animal has gone. This is one of the few holiday injuries where hours genuinely matter rather than days. Animal bite treatment in Bang Tao means washing the wound properly, starting rabies protection the same day, and watching for the ordinary infection that bites reliably cause.
Wash it for fifteen minutes, now
Before anything else, hold the wound under running water and wash with soap for a full fifteen minutes.
Fifteen minutes feels absurd standing at a sink and it is the single most effective step in the entire process. It measurably reduces rabies risk before any injection is involved, and no amount of later treatment substitutes for it.
Do not close the wound with a plaster or tape, and do not let anyone stitch a bite closed. Wash it, cover it loosely, and come in.
Rabies is the reason not to wait
Rabies is present in Thailand and is effectively always fatal once symptoms appear. It is also almost entirely preventable if treatment starts in time. Dogs, cats and monkeys are the animals that matter here.
The wound does not need to be dramatic. A scratch that barely bled counts. So does a lick on skin that was already broken. The animal looking perfectly healthy proves nothing at all, because an infectious animal can appear and behave normally for days before it sickens.

Cat bites are worse than they look
A cat’s teeth are fine and sharp and make deep, narrow punctures that seal over within hours, trapping bacteria in the tissue underneath where nothing can reach them.
A cat bite to the hand can become a serious infection within twenty-four hours, sometimes involving the tendon sheaths, and it is the bite most likely to end up needing hospital treatment. Cat bites to the hand are generally given preventive antibiotics rather than watched.
Dog bites cause more visible damage but carry a lower infection rate. Monkey bites carry rabies risk plus other viruses, and around temples and viewpoints in Phuket they are considerably more common than people expect.
How the wound itself is treated
The wound is irrigated thoroughly and any dead tissue removed. Most bites are then deliberately left open rather than stitched, because closing them traps infection — an open bite wound heals with a slightly wider scar and far less trouble.
Exceptions are made for facial wounds, where the cosmetic result matters and the blood supply is good enough to tolerate closure. We check tetanus cover, give a booster if needed, and arrange wound dressing changes over the following days.
Signs of infection to watch for
Come back the same day if you notice:
- Increasing pain after the first day
- Redness spreading outward, especially a streak up the limb
- Swelling, heat and tightness
- Pus or discharge
- Fever or feeling generally unwell
- Difficulty moving a finger, if the bite was on the hand
Trouble bending or straightening a finger after a hand bite needs urgent hospital assessment, because infection in a tendon sheath can permanently affect function. Otherwise spreading redness is cellulitis and needs antibiotics immediately.
Avoiding bites, and what to do about dogs
Most bites in Phuket are avoidable and follow a predictable pattern: someone tries to pet a street dog, feeds one, steps over a sleeping one, or comes between a dog and food.
Street dogs here are generally placid and territorial rather than aggressive. Leave them alone, do not feed them, and do not run past them — running triggers a chase response, which is why joggers and cyclists are bitten disproportionately. If a dog approaches, stand still, avoid direct eye contact, and walk away slowly rather than turning your back and hurrying.
Monkeys are the bigger problem at viewpoints and temples. Do not carry visible food or drinks, do not hold a bag loosely, and never try to take something back once a monkey has it. Children should not feed them under any circumstances — most monkey bites we treat involve a child holding food.
If you are bitten, try to note where it happened and what the animal looked like, but do not attempt to catch or follow it. Treatment proceeds on the assumption of exposure regardless, so the information is useful rather than essential.
Frequently asked questions
How soon must I start rabies treatment?
The same day if possible. There is no point at which it becomes pointless to start, but the earlier the better, and it should not wait until morning.
How much does treatment cost?
Wound care itself is inexpensive. The rabies course is the significant cost, particularly if immunoglobulin is needed. The full cost is explained at the first visit.
The animal ran off. Does that change anything?
No. Since the animal cannot be observed, treatment proceeds on the assumption that rabies exposure is possible. That is the standard approach worldwide.
Can a doctor come to my hotel?
Follow-up rabies doses can be given on a doctor hotel visit. The first visit is better at the clinic so the wound can be irrigated properly.
Do I need antibiotics as well?
Often yes, particularly for cat bites, hand bites, deep punctures and anyone with a weakened immune system. The doctor decides after examining the wound.
What about a bite from a pet I know is vaccinated?
Lower risk, but the wound still needs proper cleaning and assessment for bacterial infection, and vaccination records for pets in Thailand are not always reliable. Come in and it can be judged properly.
