Prescription Refill in Bang Tao
The bag went missing somewhere between the airport and the hotel, or the tablets you carefully counted out turn out to be two weeks short because the trip got extended. Running out of regular medication abroad is genuinely stressful, and it is one of the most routine problems we deal with. A prescription refill in Bang Tao usually takes a single short consultation.
What to bring
Anything that identifies the medication makes this far quicker:
- The original box or blister strip, even an empty one
- A photograph of the packaging
- Your prescription or repeat slip from home
- An email or pharmacy label showing the name and dose
If you have none of these we can usually still help. The generic name and the strength are what actually matter. Brand names differ between countries — the same drug routinely carries three different names across Europe, Thailand and the United States — so the generic name is worth knowing regardless.
Why a doctor has to see you
Thai pharmacies sell a great deal over the counter, but ongoing medication needs a doctor’s assessment, and it is not simply a formality to justify a fee.
Blood pressure medication needs your blood pressure checked, because the dose that suited you in a cold country is not always right after two weeks of heat and sweating. Diabetes medication needs a glucose reading for the same reason — appetite, activity and alcohol all change on holiday. Both checks take two minutes and both occasionally reveal that the dose now needs adjusting.
It also avoids interactions with anything you have been given here for a holiday illness, which is a real risk when antibiotics get added to an existing list.
What we can and cannot replace
Most everyday long-term medications are straightforward: blood pressure tablets, statins, diabetes medication, thyroid replacement, asthma inhalers, contraceptives, antidepressants, acid reflux medication and antihistamines.
Strong opioid painkillers, sleeping tablets and stimulants such as ADHD medication are tightly controlled in Thailand. Some cannot be prescribed by a clinic at all, and a few are illegal to bring into the country even with a prescription from home — which occasionally becomes a serious problem at the border rather than at a pharmacy.
If you take any of these, say so early in the consultation so you get a straight answer about the options rather than being sent round three pharmacies to find out the hard way.
If the exact brand is not available
Thailand stocks most drug classes but not every brand. Usually there is an equivalent containing the same active ingredient at the same strength, and the doctor will explain the substitution and write down both names so you can match it up at home.
Occasionally the direct equivalent is unavailable and the nearest alternative is in the same class but not identical. That is a genuine change to your treatment rather than an administrative detail, so it gets discussed properly rather than substituted quietly — including what to watch for over the following days.
Contraception, and running out mid-trip
The contraceptive pill is one of the commonest requests, particularly on extended trips. Bring the packet if you possibly can, because there are many formulations and matching it properly matters more than with most medications.
If you have already missed pills because the packet ran out, say so plainly and say how many, and when. That changes the advice about whether extra precautions are needed and for how long, and it may make emergency contraception relevant — which is available from Thai pharmacies without a prescription.
If there was also unprotected sex with a new partner, it is worth considering STD testing at the same visit rather than making a second trip for a conversation you have already started.
Planning ahead for a long stay
If you are here for months rather than weeks, it is worth converting your medication supply into something sustainable rather than repeatedly running out.
Bring a copy of your repeat prescription and a summary from your own doctor listing your conditions, medications and doses. With that, a longer supply can usually be arranged and generic equivalents identified — and Thai generics are frequently far cheaper than the equivalent at home, which surprises most people.
A health check up is worth combining with this if you have been on the same medication for years without monitoring. Blood pressure tablets, statins, thyroid replacement and diabetes medication all warrant periodic bloods, and doing it here is quick and inexpensive.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a prescription refill cost?
You pay for a short consultation plus the medication itself. Generic medicines in Thailand are often noticeably cheaper than at home, so the total is frequently less than people expect.
Can you prescribe without the original box?
Usually. Bring whatever detail you have — a photo, a pharmacy label, or the generic name and strength written down.
Can medication be delivered to my hotel?
A doctor hotel visit can include the consultation and bring the medication with the doctor, across Bang Tao, Laguna and Layan.
Can I get sleeping tablets or strong painkillers?
These are controlled in Thailand and generally cannot be prescribed on a walk-in basis. The doctor will tell you what is legally possible and suggest alternatives where they exist.
How much can I be given at once?
Enough to cover the rest of your stay in most cases. For controlled or long-term medication the doctor may give a shorter supply and ask you to return, which is about safety rather than inconvenience.
Is it legal to bring my own medication into Thailand?
Most ordinary medication is fine in reasonable personal quantities, ideally in the original labelled packaging with a copy of the prescription. Controlled drugs — strong opioids, some stimulants and some sedatives — have strict rules and a few are prohibited outright, so check before you fly rather than after you land.
