Health Check Up in Bang Tao
Long stays have a way of postponing the ordinary things indefinitely. If you have been in Phuket for months, or you have simply reached the point of noticing you have not had bloods done since before you moved, a general check is easy to arrange. A health check up in Bang Tao covers the basics in one morning and produces results you can take to any doctor in any country.
What a standard check includes
The core package covers the things that are common, silent, and genuinely worth catching early:
- Blood pressure, pulse, height, weight and oxygen saturation
- Full blood count
- Fasting blood glucose and HbA1c for diabetes
- Cholesterol and triglycerides
- Liver function
- Kidney function
- Urine analysis
- A face-to-face review of every result with the doctor
Come in the morning, and fast beforehand
Cholesterol and fasting glucose want eight to twelve hours without food, which in practice means no breakfast and an early appointment.
Drink water — it is allowed and it helps. Being dehydrated makes the blood draw harder and shifts kidney results in a way that can look alarming and mean nothing. Take your regular medication as usual unless you have been told otherwise, and bring the boxes so everything is recorded accurately rather than approximately.
What a check finds, and what it does not
A blood panel is good at picking up diabetes, high cholesterol, anaemia, thyroid problems, liver strain and reduced kidney function. Those are common, they are usually silent until quite late, and they respond well to being caught early.
It is not a cancer screen. It will not detect most cancers, and treating a normal panel as an all-clear for everything is the single most common misunderstanding about health checks. Screening for bowel, breast, cervical and prostate cancer is a separate, age-based process, and we can advise on what applies to you and refer accordingly.
The pattern we see in long-stay residents
There is a fairly consistent picture in people who have lived here a while: raised liver enzymes, high triglycerides, and blood pressure that has crept up without anyone noticing.
Life here makes it easy. Drinking is social, cheap and more or less constant. The heat discourages exercise for most of the day. Portions are generous and inexpensive, and eating out every night is normal rather than a treat.
Raised liver enzymes are not a disaster and they are a signal worth respecting rather than filing away. They frequently improve substantially within weeks of cutting back, and a repeat test three months later shows honestly whether things are moving in the right direction.
Getting the results and what happens next
Most results are ready the same day, with anything specialised following within one to three days. You get a printed copy showing your values against the reference ranges, and the doctor goes through what each one means.
If something is out of range you are told what it means, whether it needs treating now, and when to repeat it. Where a specialist is needed we refer to a Phuket hospital. If you need documentation for a visa, work permit or diving course, see medical certificate — the blood work required usually overlaps with a standard check, so it is worth mentioning before rather than after.
How often is worth checking
For a healthy adult under forty with no symptoms and no family history, every two to three years is reasonable and annual testing mostly generates anxiety rather than information.
Over forty, or with high blood pressure, diabetes, raised cholesterol, a significant family history, or genuinely heavy drinking, annual is sensible. Where something has been found and is being managed, the doctor will set the interval — often three months initially to see whether a change is working, then stretching out once it is stable.
The most useful thing you can do is keep the reports. A single set of numbers says relatively little; the same numbers taken three years apart say a great deal, and that trend is what your own doctor will want if anything ever needs investigating properly.
What the check cannot tell you, and what to do instead
Blood tests are only one part of the picture, and a few things matter more than any panel.
Blood pressure is the clearest example. It is measured at the check, but a single reading in a clinic after a hot taxi ride is a poor guide — high blood pressure is diagnosed on repeated readings over time, ideally including some taken at home. If yours is raised here, that is a reason to measure it properly over the following weeks, not to start treatment on the spot.
Symptoms also outrank a normal panel every time. Chest pain on exertion, unexplained weight loss, a change in bowel habit lasting weeks, a lump, or blood anywhere it should not be all need investigating regardless of how good the bloods look. If any of those apply, say so during the check — it changes what gets ordered, and it may mean referral rather than reassurance. The same goes for anything that needs a targeted blood test rather than a general screen.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a health check up cost?
It depends how many tests are in the panel. A basic screen is modestly priced; adding thyroid, hormones or extra markers increases it. You get an itemised quote before anything is drawn.
How long does it take?
About thirty to forty-five minutes at the clinic. Most results are back the same day and you can either wait or return later to go through them.
Do I need to fast?
Yes, eight to twelve hours for accurate cholesterol and glucose. Water is fine and helps.
Can it be done at my hotel or villa?
Yes. A doctor hotel visit can carry out the examination and take the bloods at home, with results sent afterwards.
Will the results be accepted by my doctor at home?
Yes. Results are issued in English with standard international reference ranges, so any doctor can read them without translation.
Should I be worried if one value is slightly out of range?
Usually not. Reference ranges are defined so that a proportion of entirely healthy people fall outside them. The doctor looks at the pattern across results rather than reacting to a single figure, and will tell you plainly whether it matters.
