Scooter Road Rash Care in Bang Tao
The bike went out from under you on the bend, you slid along the tarmac, and now there is a raw patch down one side with gravel still visibly embedded in it. It is the single most common injury we treat. Scooter road rash care in Bang Tao is unglamorous work — the job is scrubbing every fragment of grit out of living tissue — but it is the difference between healing cleanly in ten days and carrying a permanent grey tattoo on your leg.
Why the grit has to come out today
Two reasons, and both are serious. Dirt and gravel left sitting in a wound feed infection, and in this climate that infection develops within a day or two rather than a week.
The second reason is permanent. Fragments left under healing skin get sealed in as the wound closes over them, and they show through afterwards as blue-grey marks. This is called traumatic tattooing, and once the skin has healed there is no simple way to remove it — it needs laser or dermabrasion months later, if it can be improved at all.
Cleaning road rash properly is uncomfortable and takes time. We numb the area where we can, because a wound scrubbed half-heartedly is a wound that was not really cleaned, and the person paying for that compromise is you in six months.
What to do in the first hour
Before you reach us:
- Rinse with clean running water — bottled water is completely fine
- Do not pour antiseptic into raw tissue, and never use alcohol on it
- Cover loosely with a clean, non-fluffy cloth
- Do not apply toothpaste, oil, turmeric or any of the remedies you will be offered
- Come in the same day rather than tomorrow
If you were not wearing a helmet, or the helmet struck the road, the graze is the least important thing about the accident. Any blackout, vomiting, confusion or worsening headache means a hospital now.
How it is treated here
The wound is numbed, then irrigated with a large volume of sterile solution and scrubbed to lift out embedded grit. Dead skin flaps are trimmed away. We check the depth carefully, because a graze that is superficial across most of its area is often much deeper in one corner and may need stitches.
Tetanus cover is checked and a booster given if it is out of date, which for most travellers it is. Then the wound is dressed with a non-adherent material specifically so the next change does not tear off the new skin that has formed. Large areas are dressed in sections. Expect to come back every one to two days for wound dressing until it has closed.
Signs it is getting infected
Road rash is a large open surface in a hot, humid, sandy environment, so it deserves closer watching than a small cut. Come back the same day if you see:
- Redness spreading outward, particularly a streak running up the limb
- Pain increasing after day two instead of settling
- Yellow or green discharge, or a smell
- Fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell
- Skin around the graze becoming hot and tight

Healing on a beach holiday
Be realistic about the week ahead. No sea, no pool, no sand until the surface has closed over. Salt water on exposed dermis is both genuinely painful and a serious infection risk, and this is the instruction people most often ignore and most often regret.
Keep the wound covered during the day and let air at it in a clean room overnight. Once healed, the new skin is pink, thin and burns in minutes — keep it covered or use high-factor sunblock on it for six months, otherwise the mark darkens permanently and becomes far more visible than the injury ever was.
What else to get checked after a slide
A dramatic-looking graze absorbs all the attention, and something quieter often gets missed underneath it. Shoulders, wrists, ankles and collarbones take the impact in most scooter falls, and adrenaline masks the pain of a sprain or a cracked bone for hours.
Mention anything that feels stiff, weak or wrong even if it seems minor next to the visible injury. Can I still ride and swim?
Riding, yes, if the dressing is protected and you are comfortable. Swimming, no, until the wound has closed — usually a week or more for a large graze.
Can you treat it at my hotel?

How long does road rash take to heal?
A superficial graze closes in about a week. A deep one takes two to three weeks, and longer if it keeps getting wet or was not thoroughly cleaned at the start.
