Sore throat treatment in Bang Tao
Swallowing feels like broken glass, you slept badly because of it, and you cannot work out whether this is the air conditioning, the late night, or something that genuinely needs antibiotics. Most sore throats are viral and settle on their own. A few are not. Sore throat treatment in Bang Tao includes a rapid strep test, so the question gets answered in about ten minutes rather than argued about for a week.
Viral or bacterial — how to tell
Broadly, a cough and a runny nose point towards a virus, and their absence points towards strep. The features that raise the likelihood of bacterial infection are:
- Fever above 38C
- White patches or pus on the tonsils
- Tender, swollen glands in the neck
- No cough and no runny nose
- Sudden onset rather than a gradual build-up
Even with every one of these present it is not certain, which is precisely why a swab is worth doing rather than treating on impression.
Why antibiotics are not automatic
Most sore throats are viral, and antibiotics do nothing whatsoever for them. They will not shorten the illness, they carry side effects, and overuse drives resistance — a particular problem in Thailand, where antibiotics have long been available over the counter without a prescription.
A rapid test gives an answer in about ten minutes. If it is positive, antibiotics genuinely help and also prevent the rare but serious complications of untreated strep. If negative, we treat the symptoms properly, which for a bad viral throat still makes a substantial difference to how the next three days feel.
Why throats get sore in Phuket
Air conditioning is the biggest single cause and the one nobody suspects. A room held at 18C all night dries the throat lining thoroughly, and people wake with a raw throat that has no infection behind it at all. Set it to 24 or 25 and point the airflow away from the bed.
Add dehydration, a long-haul flight, shouting over music at a beach club, and dry-season dust and smoke, and it is entirely possible to arrive at a genuinely painful throat with no virus involved whatsoever.
What actually relieves it
Simple measures work better than people expect. Paracetamol or ibuprofen for the pain, taken regularly for the first couple of days rather than only when it becomes unbearable. Gargling with warm salt water several times daily. Anaesthetic lozenges or throat spray. Cold drinks and ice, which genuinely help.
Honey in warm water soothes and has reasonable evidence behind it. Turn the air conditioning up. And if your nose is blocked and you have been mouth-breathing all night, treating the sinus infection often resolves the throat as a side effect.
When a sore throat is urgent
Go to a hospital immediately if there is difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing your own saliva, drooling, a muffled hot-potato voice, severe pain on one side only with the jaw difficult to open, or swelling of the neck.
Those suggest a quinsy or a deeper neck infection, both of which need drainage rather than tablets. Pain confined to one side that is worsening after several days of antibiotics is the classic pattern, and it needs seeing the same day rather than waiting for the course to finish.
How long it should take to settle
A viral sore throat peaks at two to three days and settles within about a week. Strep throat improves noticeably within 24 to 48 hours of starting antibiotics, and you stop being contagious around the same point.
Come back if pain is still worsening after five days, if it becomes confined to one side, if you cannot swallow fluids, or if the fever returns after settling. A sore throat that drags on for weeks without fever is usually reflux, allergy or persistent air-conditioning dryness rather than infection, and treating it with repeated antibiotics achieves nothing.
If you are diving, note that a sore throat with a blocked nose means equalisation will be difficult and diving is best postponed until it clears — see ear infection treatment for why blocked ears and diving are a poor combination.
Tonsillitis and repeated sore throats
Tonsillitis is a sore throat with visibly inflamed tonsils, often with white patches and swollen neck glands. It can be viral or bacterial and the same rapid test applies — the appearance of the tonsils alone does not settle which, despite how convincing pus looks.
Where tonsillitis keeps returning, the pattern matters more than any single episode. Several well-documented episodes in a year is the point at which specialist referral becomes reasonable, and keeping a record of dates and treatments is genuinely useful — most people cannot recall accurately a year later, and the referral decision rests on exactly that history.
A few practical points for travellers. Finish the full antibiotic course even once the pain has gone, because stopping early is a common cause of relapse a week later. Avoid sharing drinks and utensils until 24 hours after starting treatment. And if you have had your tonsils removed, you can still get strep throat — the bacteria infect the throat generally, not only the tonsils.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a strep test cost?
The rapid test is inexpensive and is done alongside the consultation. You are told the price before it is taken.
Can I just buy antibiotics at a Thai pharmacy?
Antibiotics are widely available here, but taking them for a viral throat gives you side effects and no benefit. A ten-minute test tells you whether they will help at all.
How long should a sore throat last?
Viral sore throats peak at two to three days and settle within about a week. Pain still worsening after five days, or confined to one side, should be examined.
Can a doctor come to my hotel?
Yes. A doctor hotel visit can examine your throat and run the rapid swab in your room.
Is it contagious?
Strep throat is, for about 24 hours after starting antibiotics. Viral throats are contagious while you have symptoms. Wash your hands and avoid sharing drinks and towels.
Why do I get a sore throat every time I fly?
Cabin air is extremely dry and several hours of breathing it dries the throat lining. Drink water through the flight, avoid alcohol, and it usually settles within a day of landing.
