Something happened on a night out and you have been turning it over ever since, or a symptom has appeared that you would rather not think about at all. Either way, the useful next step is a test rather than another week of reading forums at two in the morning. STD testing in Bang Tao is private, quick, and involves explaining yourself to nobody beyond the doctor.
What we test for
A standard screen covers the infections that actually matter:

Timing — the part people get wrong
Testing too early produces a negative result that means very little, and that false reassurance is the most common problem we see. Every infection has a window period before it becomes detectable:
- HIV: a fourth-generation test is reliable from about 4 weeks, and conclusive at 12
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: about 1 to 2 weeks
- Syphilis: 3 to 6 weeks
- Hepatitis B and C: 6 weeks to 3 months
If the exposure was very recent we will still test you, and you will be told clearly what that result can and cannot rule out, and exactly when to repeat it. A baseline test taken now is genuinely useful — it establishes what was true before the exposure — as long as you understand what it is.
If the exposure was within 72 hours
This changes the priority completely, and it is the reason not to wait until morning.
HIV can often be prevented after an exposure with PEP, a course of medication that must start within 72 hours and works considerably better the earlier it begins. Do not wait for a test result to decide — a test now tells you about your status weeks ago, not about the exposure you are worried about.
If there is a real risk — condom failure with an unknown partner, any assault, a needlestick — come in immediately and ask about PEP and PrEP. The clock is what matters.
Symptoms worth getting checked
Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, which is precisely why screening exists rather than waiting to feel unwell. When symptoms do appear, the common ones are burning on passing urine, unusual discharge, sores or ulcers, itching, an unexplained rash, or pain in the lower abdomen or testicles.
Several of these have entirely different causes. Burning on urination is frequently a urinary tract infection, and discharge is often a yeast infection. Testing sorts out which, and treating the wrong one wastes days while the real problem continues.
Privacy, results and treatment
Results are given to you and to nobody else. Nothing is reported to your hotel, your employer, your travel companion, your insurer or your embassy. You may use a first name at reception if you prefer, and a passport is not required to be tested.
Rapid tests give an answer during the visit. Laboratory tests come back within one to three days and can be sent to you by message rather than requiring a second trip. If anything is positive, treatment usually starts the same day, and most bacterial infections are cured with a single course of antibiotics.
Telling a partner, and what happens next
This is the part people dread more than the test. If something is positive, current or recent partners need to know so they can be tested and treated — otherwise reinfection is close to guaranteed, and untreated chlamydia in particular causes long-term harm.
The doctor will talk through how to have that conversation and can give you a written note about what was diagnosed and treated, which many people find easier to hand over than to explain. Most bacterial infections are fully cured, and you should avoid sex until treatment is complete and any partner has been treated too — usually seven days after a single-dose treatment.
Getting tested before you fly home
A lot of people would rather deal with this in Phuket than at a clinic where they might be recognised, and there is nothing wrong with that reasoning. Testing here is quick, private and inexpensive compared with most of Europe, Australia and North America.
The practical catch is the window period. If the exposure was in the last fortnight, a test taken before you fly is not the final answer, and you will need to repeat it at home. We give you a written record of exactly what was tested, on what date, and when each repeat becomes reliable — which means your own doctor can pick it up without starting from scratch or repeating tests you have already paid for.
If treatment is needed, it usually starts the same day and is completed before you travel. Where a course runs past your flight, you get enough medication and clear written instructions to finish it properly rather than abandoning it halfway.
